What’s in Season: A Guide to Flowers Through the Year

Tall arrangement of foxgloves, ferns and wild flowers beside a branch arch

Seasonal flowers are at their freshest, often last longer, and give a bouquet a sense of time and place. I build every arrangement around what is at its best, so here is a guide to what you can expect through the year.

Spring

Spring brings tulips, narcissi, anemones, ranunculus and hyacinths, along with flowering branches and blossom. Towards the end of spring, lilac and the first peonies arrive.

Summer

Early summer is peony season, followed by sweet peas, garden roses, cornflowers, foxgloves and delphiniums. By mid-summer dahlias, sunflowers, cosmos and scabious are in full swing.

Autumn

Autumn is all about rich colour: dahlias until the first frosts, chrysanthemums, rudbeckia, seed heads, grasses and berries. It is a wonderful time for textured, natural arrangements.

Winter

Winter bouquets lean on hellebores, amaryllis, scented narcissi, eucalyptus, evergreens and berries, with dried flowers and grasses adding texture.

Why it matters

Choosing Florist Choice lets me pick the best of the season for you. If you have a favourite flower, add it to the notes for the florist and I will include it whenever it is available.
